The long journey survival guide: In it for the long haul

If there is just one thing that often dissuades people from traveling as much as they’d like, it’s the long journeys. Make no mistake about it, traveling can be, at times, just as testing as it is boring. No two journeys are ever the same, but there are certain variables that can be comparable. You can certainly expect to spend a lot of time checking your watch and muttering “okay, only four hours to go,” to yourself in convincing fashion.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to make traveling seem like a breeze? If there were methods you could use to make the hours fly by? Well, while no journey is ever going to be enjoyable by any stretch of the imagination, there are ways in which you can lessen the burden, at least. Not all flights and rides need to be miserable. Preparation is key. If you can get a couple of these tricks down to a fine art, your travel time will be a much less daunting prospect.

Distract Yourself

On a flight, especially, your options are somewhat limited. You have no way of connecting to the internet, and your viewing pleasure is whatever the airline dictates. It is absolutely imperative that you have yourself a backup plan. Bring your laptop along, for a start. Even if you can’t get online, you can load it up with games, movies, and music to your heart’s content. If that isn’t your bag, bring along that book you’ve been meaning to make a start on. Time is the one thing you have in abundance on any trip.

Dress for the Occasion

Comfort is of utmost importance when it comes to travel. You’ve already got enough obstacles in your way without adding anything else to the mix. You should wear comfortable clothing that can be easily adapted if you’re too hot or too cold. Make sure you have a jacket at an arm’s length should you need it, and equally, somewhere to store it if you’re too hot. You can also get specific travel clothes that are designed to counteract any problems you may encounter during long journeys.

Upgrade to First Class

There are a lot of people that struggle to justify the hefty costs that come as a result of upgrading their flight or train ride. How much better can it be, anyway? Well, put those frequent flier miles to good use and find out for yourself. Once you’ve gone first class, there is simply no turning back. Between the endless legroom, better service, and improved food, there is only one way to travel.

Of course, if all else fails, you can always attempt to sleep your way through the journey. This is a plan that is put into practice by many travelers, but there is the chance of it backfiring. Don’t deprive yourself of sleep with the idea of catching up on your flight. Should you, for any reason, struggle to fall asleep, you’ll only make your journey more miserable. If you’re going to use any sleeping aids, natural or not, make sure you give them a test run before the big day. You don’t want to suffer any unexpected adverse effects.

Great tips! I usually just sleep on long haul flights, although sometimes it does backfire — I end up with a terrible jet lag. 😛 When all else fails, there’s always the in-flight movies. 🙂

hehe I usually sleep because I get motion sick so sleeping prevents me from throwing up in the plane 😛
