Black Waffle, Northcote, Victoria, Australia

I’ve been feeling a bit antsy staying at home so I decided to go out to Northcote, pick a cafe, and read a book. As I was walking along High Street, this dessert shoppe called Black Waffle caught my eye. I was going to order a waffle with all the yummy toppings on it but being unemployed, I couldn’t afford it so I settled for an iced mocha and a bagel with Nutella.

Food

At first sip of my iced mocha I thought it was waaayyy tooo sweet. On second sip, after sinking my straw a bit lower, I thought it was a bit bitter for my liking. I decided then to mix the gelato and the espresso together and it actually tasted like heaven. It perfectly balanced the taste out. Their chocolate gelato was rich and creamy and their espresso was bold and distinct. The bagel was pretty ordinary and it got rock hard after a few minutes.

I do know their gelato and waffles are all homemade. I really am excited to try their waffles and of course, more of their gelato on black waffle cones next time. They also serve croissants filled with all of the sweet stuff your heart desires.

And yes, they are also vegan-friendly.

Price

The iced mocha costs AUD$6.50 and the bagel with Nutella costs AUD$5.

Their staff members were all friendly and they do take cleanliness of the place seriously. Someone is always wiping and clearing out tables. Plus they all do their jobs with a smile on their faces.

They give out this cool New York-ish vibe complete with brick walls and neon signs.

  1. I love a good waffle, and these kind of places, but not sure about a rock hard bagel! Plus $5 is a lot for a bagel with nutella! I do like an iced mocha however, especially in the sun.

  2. This was a fun read. I love how you mixed your mocha and gelato together for the perfect taste.

Seems like a good place; ideal, as you say, for a place to while away an hour or two with a good book. Shame that the bagel was rock hard…I love mocha, and gelato mixed with espresso? That’s something I need to try one day 😉

  3. I can understand that mixed feeling while having something new! I too feel the same way when I try new dishes! The shop looks great. Hope they provide better bagels next time!

I am happy you’re going around exploring the hidden secrets of your new hometown 🙂 The iced mocha looks amazing, with the whipped cream as does the bagel with Nutella (although I like my bagels savoury rather than sweet). Have fun exploring more such places!

Sad you couldn’t try out waffles like originally intended to. The coffee sounds delicious with the Gelato added. Homemade waffles and gelato are pure heaven, hope you get to try it here soon.

  4. I actually haven’t had a bagel yet since I’ve lived in Australia. haha The Americans say it’s just not the same….what do you think about the bagel?

I know where to go to satisfy my waffle and croissant craving when I’m visiting Victoria, Australia! I love how they make their gelatos and waffles in-house. There is something extra special for homemade products. Have you made a return visit to try other items?

  5. I don’t know if I will ever go to Australia because is so so far from Romania, where I live. But the Black Waffle certainly has so very-good-looking and tasty foods. I bet it is one of the most popular places in Northcote Victoria.

  6. Waffles are great and I completely understand how you feel at least you are able to wander around and found a new hang out to go. I’m glad you ended up liking your drink. What country are you in right now?

  7. I’m glad you can wander your new place and found a place to hang out. It’s good that you ended up liking your drink. I enjoy a waffle, but I can understand the bagel with Nutella is yummy too.
