If you live in a city or any other urban area, you may never have seen a clear night’s sky. Light pollution ruins the view for a lot of us, making it hard to get a real sense of what the stars look like. Even when we’re lucky enough to be somewhere with less light pollution, clouds can still get in the way. If you want to have an incredible experience of seeing a sky full of stars, there are some amazing places you can visit. You sleep out under the stars, or at least sit and watch them until it’s time for bed. Check out some of this awesome locations in the USA for sleeping under the stars.
Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
This reserve in southern Utah is known for its spiral rock formations. They’re called “hoodoos”, strange rock shapes made by erosion. But it’s also an incredible location if you’re seeking out some clear skies. You can get both tent camping sites and campsites for your RV, where you can have up to 10 people (six adults maximum). However, you do need to be careful if you want to take your RV. There are parking restrictions for vehicles over 25 feet long.
Big Bend National Park, Texas
This park in Texas is one of a number of special dark sky locations in the the US. So it is officially one of the best places to find a starry night’s sky. Pick a night with no moon if you want the best chance of seeing as many stars as possible. When you’re not admiring the stars at night, there’s plenty to see during the day. The park is named for its “big bend” in the Rio Grande. The region contains more than 1,200 plant species, over 450 types of bird and many reptiles and mammals too.
Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska
This Alaskan park is the largest of any national park in the country. It’s an impressive nine million acres large, which is more than the expanse of Switzerland. You’ll find everything from glaciers to forests and rivers. And at night, when the sun goes down, you’ll get an awesome impression of the sky. Visit during the winter and there’s a chance of seeing the aurora borealis, as well as the beautiful stars.
Acadia National Park, Maine
Head to Acadia to grab yourself a site at one of the park’s campgrounds. You’ll get a stunning view of the night’s sky, and it’s a great place to see a sunrise or sunset too. Head to Cadillac Mountain, which is the highest peak in Hancock County. In fall and winter, the mountain sees the sunrise before anywhere else in the country. There are some fantastic hiking trails around the mountain too.
Great Basin National Park, Nevada
If you’re looking for an impressive view of the Milky Way, Great Basin National Park is well known for them. The annual astronomy festival is a testament to the panoramic views you can experience. It’s a great trip for all the family if you have some budding astronomers on your hands.
