There’s nothing like a good rambling road trip holiday through the heart of America. Every state has great locations everyone should try to visit at least once. Texas has so many that we’ve decided to split it in two. If you’re ever headed through north of Texas, try hitting these spots. Most of them can be found on the legendary Route 66. The others require a bit more of a trek but are definitely worth it.
Fort Worth
If history’s your thing, you will definitely want to check out Fort Worth in all its glory. The city “where the west begins” has long been an important part of Texan and American history as one of the old republic’s primary frontier forts. Civil War aficionados will particularly adore the museum. There you’ll find one of the finest collection of real memorabilia from that conflict.
Dallas
When you’re talking about northern Texas, you simply have to make mention of Dallas. The metropolis of the south, there are too many Dallas tourist sites to mention in one paragraph. The Perot Museum of Nature and Science will captivate the big kid in all of us. The Arboretum has a collection of flora you’ll not likely see anywhere else. Uptown Dallas is a treat all in itself. If you’re passing by, you owe it to yourself to spend a night or two in the city.
The Ghosts of Route 66
Route 66 is one of those roads that’s full of some of the weirdest and most wonderful remnants of American life. This entry is a rather sombre note, but just as memorable. Texola, the ghost town on the border of Oklahoma and Texas, is well worth a slow drive through.
The Big Texan Steak Ranch
If you’re talking about great experiences along the road through North Texas, then you got to talk about food as well. In particular, any list would be incomplete without mention of the Big Texan Steak Ranch. Serving real good food in a real traditional setting, the restaurant is a local treasure now with a visitors centre all to itself. You might want to go hungry for a while, because you’re guaranteed to feel stuffed after you leave here.
The Cadillac Ranch
Another ranch but one of a decidedly different kind. If you like the weird and wonderful, then the Cadillac Ranch is quite the sight to behold. Part art installation, part piece of local history, the Cadillac Ranch was installed by a San Franciscan art group called the Art Farm. It belongs to the people passing through now, tagged with countless graffiti and missing parts that have been pilfered. If anything, it just adds to its own unique beauty.
Big Bend National Park
This is almost too southern to be included on the list, but it just had to be. The Big Bend National Park is natural beauty at its finest. It’s amazingly huge, with plenty of unique wildlife opportunities and some of the finest campsites you can find in the world.
