Sexmuseum Amsterdam Venustempel, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

There are many awesome museums to check out in Amsterdam that cover a whole wide of different interests people may have. There’s the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Rembrandt House Museum, Museum of Bags and Purses, Amsterdam Cheese Museum, Museum of Prostitution, Torture Museum, and Houseboat Museum among many others.

With only less than 24 hours in Amsterdam, I did not have time to check out as many museums as I can but I did manage to spare about an hour or so to check out Sexmuseum Amsterdam Venustempel, the first and oldest sex museum in the world.

My friend, Geoffrey, and I were walking aimlessly on the streets of Amsterdam while eating frites when we saw the Sex Museum on Damrak Street. We debated whether or not to check it out but eventually decided we might as well so we did.

Entrance to the museum costs €4 or approximately CAD$6.02 (back in July/August 2015). For that price, I highly recommend checking it out but you do have to be at least 16 years of age (and don’t be a prude).

I did not know what to expect to see inside but we were definitely in for a treat. There was this figure of a man wearing a coat and will suddenly move and flash you as you walk pass it which definitely made Geoffrey’s day. I never saw him giggle that hard the entire trip we were together.  There were also a lot of paintings, figures, photographs, recordings, and other unique art that showcase and highlight one of mankind’s favourite activity throughout history. My favourite part of the museum was the really huge plastic phallus standing erect.

Did I learn anything from the museum? Hmmm, not really but did I enjoy it? Uhm, yes!

Hours: Sunday to Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Hahaha a figure of a man in a coat that suddenly flashes you? Sounds hilarious! I’ve been to the sex museum in New York but didn’t know there’s one in Amsterdam too. They’re usually very amusing and I love going to such places 🙂

  1. I was in Amsterdam in August and saw the museum while walking around. I didn’t go but my boyfriend and I took a walk around the red light district out of curiosity. It was certainly interesting ?

Hahaha, definitely looks like a lot of fun! Not all museums need to be erudite…although this looks like it is informative in its own way, in the sense that you get a bit more of an insight in to alternative lifestyles, so to speak 😉

  2. Hahahah this one is so funny, I can’t stop laughing at the pictures. Thanks for this blog. I am gonna show this to my partner. We must visit this next time I am in Amsterdam!

Haha I loved reading through this, I’ve been to Amsterdam a few times over the years but haven’t actually been to the sex museum, I can imagine you were laughing all the way through it 😀 – That’s the thing with Amsterdam, has so much of the weird and wonderful but you’re always left entertained 😀

  4. Lol that photo of you with the large um statue really made my day! I used to visit Amsterdam frequently, but actually never made it here! It looks interesting, and very part of the Dutch open culture!

  5. I went to this museum in January last year (I spent New Year’s in Amsterdam actually) – it’s really interesting isn’t it? Though I did think a few of the mannequins and models could have done with a bit of “touching up”, no pun intended haha. Some of them were a little yellowing now x

  6. That would have been too funny seeing the statue of the man flashing you when you walked past! What an interesting place to visit. Amsterdam has it all, doesn’t it!
