It is certainly not uncommon to come back from a vacation and think “Gosh, I would love to live there.” In fact, if you start travelling more often, then it can become a distressingly common thought. But just how much does it make sense? How do you even manage such a thing? Here, we’re going to look at some of the challenges and a few questions you really need to ask yourself.
Is it legally feasible?
First of all, you have to think about what it would actually take to move there. If you’ve been on a city break in the country then, sure, it won’t be too difficult to make that move, providing you’re confident you can work there. For overseas places, you might need a visa to legally live there, even for a brief period of time.
Do you really want to live there?
Visiting a place on vacation is much different from living there, as we should all be fully aware. It is worth arranging a longer trip than your usual vacation to see what it is like to actually live in the area, getting a good idea of amenities, of finances, and of culture shock to make sure there aren’t a few nasty surprises when you do make the move. Do your research, especially if planning to move abroad.
Are there jobs available?
If you run your own business, especially an online one, then this might not be too much of a concern at all. For most, however, you need to make sure that there is job availability to sustain your life there. In hot vacation spots, you might find that the tourism industry is where you would most likely find work, but there could be other industries you could break into.
Do you have the logistics figured out?
How are you going to make the move? If you’re travelling domestically to another place in the country, for example if you live in the US and moving within Phoenix area, then you can simply learn more today about MyBekins and other moving companies and find the best one for helping you manage the long-distance trek. Otherwise, you might need to think about overseas moving companies or even moving light and buying what you need on the other side. Budget like your life depends on it (because it will).
Do you have family or friends out there?
Travel lovers are independent people, and able to spend a lot of time alone, but it is important to have people to come home to at the end of the day. If you can make the move with a loved or some friends, then that’s all the better. Otherwise, it’s wise to move somewhere where you at least have some connections you can build off.
It’s not impossible that a favorite vacation destination could become your new home, and even a beloved one at that. However, it is important that you don’t rush into any major decisions. Plan it out, make sure you think long and hard about whether it’s the right move, and what you have to do to make it.
You bring up some good points if a travel destination is a viable choice to live at. While I love traveling to Japan, I know that finding a job will be difficult as I don’t speak the language and I’m sure there are restrictions for work permits, etc. As of now, I’ll just travel there a few times a year 🙂
I would love to live in Japan too but I also don’t speak the language. Have you considered maybe teaching English there? Although you might not stay there for life, just the experience of living there for a couple of years would still be great! How often do you visit Japan in a year?
What a coincidence. I have just been thinking of this because salaries in Romania are very low and I’d like to try something new. My favorite place is the Middle East, I just love the culture and architecture, but not so sure where to move there. Maybe Oman in winter may be a good idea.
Seeing as my favorite destination, Japan, is one I’ve yet to visit, I can’t really say! Getting a feel of the place, and seeing if you can work there is super important!

This is something that Matt and I talk about frequently! With each other and with others. I feel that we are more realistic when it comes to this topic. Like yeah it’s a dream to live in your favorite vacation destination, but is really that feasible? You’ve got to be realistic about it.
It’s a fun question to ask at the very least, that’s for sure. I have actually moved to places that have stolen my heart (Seoul, Istanbul etc.), and I can’t say I ever regretted it!
