It’s been more than six years since I moved to Canada from the Philippines and there are a lot of things I miss from the motherland. The number one thing I miss though is the food especially the dessert! I have always had a sweet tooth and I always make room for dessert in every meal.
Anyways, here are the top five Filipino desserts that I miss and that you should try yourself if you ever visit the Philippines!
Yeah, I know you’re first question would be “What the hell is dirty ice cream?” Well, it is ice cream sold on the streets in the Philippines and if you ask me why it is called dirty ice cream, I honestly, don’t know (If other Filipinos can help me out here in answering that question, that would be much appreciated). It isn’t dirty (at least I hope not but then again, it could be?) 😛
Anyways, dirty ice cream comes in a variety of flavours but Mang Sorbetero (Mr. Dirty Ice Cream vendor) usually only has three flavours at a time. My favourite flavours are chocolate (I’m chocoholic), keso (cheese – yeah, it’s yummy, try it and hopefully you don’t find it weird), and ube (purple yam).
Dirty ice cream can be served in a cone, in a cup, or in a sweet bun – which I prefer by the way (yep! sweet buns and ice cream goes together, another thing for you to try).
When I think about my childhood, this is the first thing that comes to mind. Every morning, when I hear a guy from the street yelling “taaaaahooooooooo!” I knew I had to get up and ask my mom for some change so I can go out the gate and call Mang Tataho (Mr. Taho seller) and give me this delicious treat!
Taho is made of soft tofu (I hate tofu but I make an exception for taho), caramel sauce, and sago (tapioca pearls). To be honest though, when I was little, I mostly just eat the caramel sauce and sago and leave most of the soft tofu in my cup. Haha.
Aaahhh. Turon reminds me of lazy afternoons and either my grandma, my aunt, or our household helper makes this sweet, deep fried bananas. They are usually made with saba banana (native Filipino banana) and sometimes langka (jackfruit) wrapped in lumpia (spring roll) wrapper. So basically, I guess, you can think of spring rolls but instead of meat and veggies inside, it’s bananas and jackfruit! Yum!
Ice candy is basically just homemade frozen flavoured water and is perfect for hot, summer days. It is so easy to make that I made some of my own when I was little. My favourite is of course chocolate ice candy!
Most of you probably have heard of the infamous Filipino dessert halo-halo? This is almost just like it but take out most of the ingredients of a halo-halo (for example sweet beans, jellies, fruits) and just leave the shaved ice, sugar, and evaporated milk then add corn. Okay, I know some people find it weird to have corn as a dessert but just try it! You might just like it! I love this one better than the halo-halo. I always pick out the beans and such out of a halo-halo anyways. 😛 Augh. This is so perfect.

I haven’t had any of these desserts before but would definitely like to try them! This post just made me nostalgic about the food I miss from Bangladesh, maybe one day will write a post about food I miss there. Great way to share with others, just I learnt in this post 🙂

They love absolutely delicious! I tried to decide which one I’d try if I were to visit the country – I have no idea – but taho looks the best – I’m not quite sure about the tofu part, but as you say you can always skip it 😀

A friend recently brought a dessert made from UBE to a potluck and I loved it. That and another Filipino dessert were delicious. Very different than what I’ve ever eaten. Would love to try these as well, especially the bananas.
