On June 13, my brother and I took my mom and two other siblings who were visiting from San Diego, California to West Edmonton Mall (WEM). We drove to Edmonton from Drayton Valley and it was about an hour and a half drive. We got there a little bit after noon and went shopping for a few hours before deciding to head over to the WEM World Waterpark.
They have never seen an indoor waterpark as huge as the one at West Edmonton Mall and my siblings were really excited. The WEM World Waterpark is almost 30 years old! It opened in 1986.
On that day we went, regular rate for the waterpark is CAD$45 per person while children under 48 inches and seniors are $36 and children under two years of age are free. They do have discounted price if you go in three hours before closing, which we did. Twilight pass is $33 per person. For a more detailed information about rates, click here. Tubes cost about CAD$5 but lucky for us, when we got inside, a really nice human being asked us if we want a tube and gave it to us for free! 🙂 As for towels, you can bring one with you or you can get towels from there. They will ask you to pay CAD$3 per towel but will reimburse you the money afterwards when you return it.
The WEM World Waterpark has a lot to offer to swimmers and non-swimmers of all ages. There are a number of slides to choose from for both beginners and daredevils 😛 Lines for the slides can take hours which is why I would suggest to spend the whole day at the waterpark instead of going in at twilight, if enjoying the slides is what you’re going there for. You will get more bang for your buck if you get a regular pass because you get more hours to play.
But being a scaredy-cat like me, who is not into slides, I am pretty content with just swimming in the wave pool. 😀
There is also a hot tub for people who just wants to relax their aching bodies.
A splash playground is available for kids, which I really enjoyed as well. 😀
The tsunami is one of the waterpark’s newest attractions. It “is a simulated surfing attraction that allows you to surf an endless wave in a controlled environment.” This attraction, however, is not included in the entrance fee. Here’s a tip for you ladies: this is where the hot guys hang out. Let’s just say I (and my sister) had fun checking out their abs 😛
The Hurricane which is also a new attraction in the waterpark is already included in the entrance fee. It “is an inflatable ball within a ball that contains water and rotates – you enter the inner ball and run or slide in the water as the ball spins. It’s one of only 15 in the world and the first in Canada!”
Another cool thing you can do at the waterpark is zipline and/or bungee jump inside! Unfortunately, that is another activity not included in the entrance fee.
Expenses: CAD$33 entrance fee x four people = CAD$132 plus tax. Gas CAD$20 (from Drayton Valley to Edmonton and back). Total expense for the day is approximately CAD$152.
