Tunnel Mountain, Alberta, Canada

Tunnel Mountain in Alberta, Canada is an easy hike for beginners who want to experience the Canadian outdoors and still be fairly close to Banff’s town centre for a scrumptious meal after or perhaps a dip in Banff’s hot springs.

The trail has a distance of 4.3 kilometres one-way and has an elevation of 300 metres. The duration of the hike should take about 30 to 40 minutes one-way.

Pets and children may also join this hike as the trail in Tunnel Mountain is well-maintained. Expect the trail to have long switchbacks and narrows as you near the top. Once you reach the top, you may give your feet a rest and take a seat on the two huge red chairs. From the top of the mountain, enjoy the view of Banff’s town centre as well as Banff Springs golf course, Mount Rundle, and the Bow River.

I recommend this hike to hikers of all ages and abilities no matter the season!

Reminders and tips:

  • Please stay on trail.
  • Wear appropriate and proper hiking gear.
  • Bring bear spray.
  • Don’t forget your water! It is important to always be properly hydrated even during winter.
  • Take a rest if you need to.
  • Carry your trash with you.

I’m always looking for new hiking trails and Tunnel Mountain needs to be added to the list. I love how the trail isn’t too long so it’s doable for all ages. Plus the view of the snow-capped mountains from the red chairs is beautiful. Are crampons needed to complete the hike in the winter?

Crampons will definitely be a good idea. I didn’t have crampons on so I was slipping on the icy road a lot.
