There are many things to consider when booking a hotel. I have compiled a list you may refer to before you book your next hotel accommodation no matter where in the world you choose to travel next.

Location
I believe the best advice I can give is to plan in advance what type of activities you want to do, what landmarks you want to see, and where you want to eat. This will give you an idea as to which area you should look for a hotel. I highly suggest booking your hotel accommodations in close proximity to the places you want to check out during your travels. This will not only save your money on transportation costs but also your time spent traveling from your hotel to the places in your planned itinerary. At the very least, if you are not renting a car, choose a hotel where public transportation is readily accessible even if the places you want to check out are far from your hotel.
Security
Being a female traveller who loves to travel solo, my safety and well-being has always been my top priority when travelling. Therefore, I have put such a great deal in finding accommodations that have a great security system in place. I urge you to do the same when searching for a hotel especially in cities where there is a high crime rate. Some security measures to look for in a hotel includes having a front desk with staff for 24-hours or even security guards, surveillance cameras, and guests-only access to hotel premises.
Amenities

Do make a list of amenities that are non-negotiable for you before you book a hotel online. Do you need parking? Would you like to have breakfast included? Is soaking in a hot tub or a pool after a long day of exploring a must? How about free Wifi to update your social media so family and friends can see what you’ve been up to?
Budget
The amount of money you are willing to spend can have a major impact on which hotel you get to stay at. This will determine the factors mentioned above including location, security, and amenities. Choose a hotel that makes the most financial sense but also meets your needs and wants. Do not feel guilty spending a bit more money on accommodations especially since you are on vacation after all!
Lastly, I would highly suggest to book your hotel ahead of time so you will have one less thing to worry about and start enjoying your well-deserved holiday.
