There is somewhat of a correlation between your average traveler and your average foodie. The two go hand in hand and are a match made in culinary heaven. The natural explorer may have stumbled upon his or her passion for food by way of a total accident. It’s simply a consequence of experiencing new cultures so often.
You visit a place, you absorb its unique atmosphere, and you try its culinary delights. Somewhere along the way, you find yourself turning into a bit of a food snob. That’s okay. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It just means that you can get more pleasure out of your travels. An unfortunate truth that you’re going to need to get your head around, though, is that not everywhere is going to live up to your expectations.
Not least of all in America, which is hardly world renowned for its contributions to food. It’s all too easy to get roped into the fast food culture when you’re on your travels in the good old United States. You can, however, avoid this disappointment by targeting some of America’s greatest food hotspots. Here are the cities you need to try:
Charleston, South Carolina
At first glance, you may not expect America’s friendliest city to be renowned for its cuisine. But that is certainly how things have shaped up in recent years. Thanks to its sheer diversity of different restaurants, Charleston has become known as something like a city of food critics. The inhabitants are definitely holding their caterers up to higher standards than before, and that is by no means a bad thing. With new restaurants popping up in the city every single day, there has never been a better time to try Charleston on for size.
Monterey, California
The coastal city in California has definitely earned its place among the culinary constituents of North America. Monterey is perhaps best known for two things; both of them to do with the food industry. The first, and perhaps most famous, is its Monterey Jack cheese, which has become a staple of American food. The other is for its contributions to the seafood industry. Monterey was once the source of sardine packing in the United States, and it shows today. The very best seafood in Monterey perhaps comes from the Cannery Row, which is well worth your time to check out.
New York City, New York
It’s no surprise that The Big Apple finds its way onto this list by virtue of its cultural diversity. New York is a veritable melting pot of different backgrounds. You can’t walk down a New York street without stumbling upon a variety of different cuisines. That’s because the self-proclaimed Greatest City in the World was built on a foundation of immigration. In particular, the French, Italian, and Jewish all made their way to the heart of the United States. You’ll find whatever it is you’re looking for in New York without a doubt.
