Attracting millions of visitors every year, Spain is one destination you won’t want to miss on your next Eurotrip. There are plenty of beautiful regions to explore, all offering a different taste of Mediterranean culture. For some inspiration, we’ve put together this guide on some of the best places to visit.
Andalusia
Undoubtedly, one of the best regions for traditional culture, Andalusia is quintessential Spain. It has everything you could need for a memorable holiday, from the traditional flamenco dancers of Seville to the golden beaches on the Costa Del Sol and the famed tapas of Grenada. You’ll also want to visit the city of Malaga which has been awarded the European Capital of Culture for 2016. With so many cheap flights to Malaga, there’s never been a better reason to go there. Things to see include the ancient fortification of Alcazaba which dates back to the 11th century and an impressive Roman amphitheater. There’s also a lively nightlife scene with many mega-clubs hosting international DJ’s.
Catalonia
Bordering France, this is a great introduction to Spain for those travelling overland. No trip to the region would be complete without enjoying the sights and nightlife of Barcelona. An open-top city bus tour is a great way to admire the iconic Gaudi architecture before spending the evening at the famed Las Ramblas boulevard where you can sample some of the many bars and clubs. The nearby town of Sitges is worth checking out, only a 45 minute journey via train from Barcelona. Here you’ll find some beautiful secluded coves to soak up the sun and there’s even a few nudist beaches for the adventurous. Not for the faint hearted or younger generation!
Madrid
This vibrant capital city is also the name for an entire region which covers other smaller cities. Travel to the nearby former capital, Toledo and take a step back through time. In the walled old city, visitors can marvel at medieval monuments, palaces and crumbling fortresses. A day trip from Madrid to Segovia is also a must for lovers of great architecture. In the old city, you’ll find a fairy tale castle known as Alcazar which is claimed to have been the inspiration behind the castle in Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.
Galicia
Located in the verdant northwest corner of the country, the rolling hills and deserted beaches of Galicia offer visitors an experience unlike anywhere else in the country. Be sure to visit the stunning cathedral in Santiago de Compostela which marks the final point for those walking the Camino de Santiago. The coastal town of Fisterra is also worth visiting – once the most western point of the Roman Empire and thought to be the end of the world. Galicia is also famed for its seafood which is considered some of the best in Spain. It is also home to the original Empanada, a savory pie stuffed with seafood in a slow cooked onion sauce. Best washed down with a chilled glass of sangria.
