Herbert Hotel, San Francisco, California, USA

My boyfriend and I went to California for 10 days. We started the trip in San Diego, headed to Los Angeles, then drove to San Francisco. We were in San Francisco from Dec. 26 to 28. We booked our hotel online while we were still in Canada. The price was CAD$100 per night.

This is just a few steps from the Herbert Hotel.
This is where we had dinner on our first night in San Francisco and is just a few steps from the hotel as well.

Location: Herbert Hotel is located right in Union Square. There were a lot of places to shop and eat that are in close proximity to the hotel. Some of the shops close by are H&M (right across from the hotel), Macy’s, Uniqlo, Daiso, Urban Outfitters, and Walgreens. As for places to eat, there are a lot of restaurants, pubs, and coffee shops just within walking distance as well. It’s also close to tourist attractions including the Powell-Hyde cable car line and Chinatown.

Parking: There is no private parking provided by the hotel for guests but there are a lot of parking spaces available in Union Square that are within walking distance. We parked our car about two blocks away from the hotel and it cost us $35 per 24 hours.

This is found right on the street where Herbert Hotel is located!

Transportation: During our stay in San Francisco, though, we found that public transportation is reliable enough and the traffic that we have to deal with wasn’t worth it to use our rental car. A bus ride cost us US$2/CAD$2.65. And a roundtrip local train ticket cost us US$4.50/CAD$5.95. In addition, most of the places we wanted to see are within walking distance from each other.

Lobby: The front desk staff were nice enough and not overly-friendly like other front desk staff I’ve interacted with. They gave us a print-out containing some information about the history of the hotel, places to see in San Francisco and how to get there, as well as suggestions on where to eat. A cold water dispenser is also available in the lobby which is perfect after coming back to the hotel from a whole day of walking around the city.

Our room!

Room: We booked an economy room with a queen bed and a hall bathroom. Our room was spotless clean and smelled nice. The bed is super comfy with clean, white sheets. I can attest that there were no bed bugs which is a big no-no for me when travelling. It wasn’t spacious (250-300 square feet) but it met our needs.

At the end of the hallway, toilet is located on the left and bathroom is on the right.

Bathroom/Toilet: As mentioned, we do not have our private bath and toilet so we had to share the bathroom and toilet down the hall with other guests on our floor. The toilet was really small but clean. The bathroom is the same, small but clean. The hotel also provided shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in their bathroom. My only complaint is that the water pressure in the shower wasn’t good.

There are stairs but there’s also an elevator so don’t worry!

Does Jusz Travel recommend this place? I highly recommend this place. With its location and proximity not only to tourist attractions but also to shops and restaurants is one reason. Followed by the cleanliness of the room and bathroom/toilets. Lastly, the price doesn’t break the bank and I think for CAD$100 a night with everything that the hotel offers, it is a great deal!

  2. I am always looking for hotels that are situated right in the middle of the ‘happening’ area of a city, even if they’re not very close to the tourist spots. CAD 100 for a clean and friendly place with an amazing location is just what one needs. This is a good find!

  5. You look really cold! But then, from what I remember about San Francisco, it could get very chilly! The location looks pretty central too, would you say this hotel is budget/mid-range? I agree when you say, I’m not keen on bed bugs neither!

I would say it is pretty affordable. Paying $100 for a central location and a clean hotel, it is pretty good!

  6. Looks really fresh and nice. I can definitely relate to your fear of bed bugs. I had them in Thailand and it was an absolute nightmare. It made me paranoid for so long after and I felt phantom itching in any bed that I slept in!
